Secret Service agents and local police officers arrested a 33-year-old Washington state man early Sunday after he allegedly placed electronic devices on and near the ATM machine at the North Main Street TD Bank branch to steal customer information.

A bank employee called the Secret Service Saturday afternoon after discovering a device, known as a skimmer, had been attached to the card reader that allows access to the ATM vestibule, according to police arrest reports.

Another device, an overlay with a pinhole camera, had been attached to the 465 North Main St. ATM unit itself.

The Secret Service in turn contacted East Longmeadow police and law enforcement personnel set up a surveillance of the ATM which included placing investigators in the area and the monitoring of the live video feed from its security camera.

Police said the suspect approached the ATM at about 4 a.m. on Sunday and was arrested after he began to remove the two devices.

Aaron B. Dario, 2020 Grant Ave. S, Apt. K104, Renton, Wash., was charged with larceny from a building, credit card fraud over $250, unauthorized access to a computer system, malicious destruction of property over $250, identity fraud, possession of burglarious instruments and breaking and entering a building in the nighttime.

Dario, police said, was dressed in dark clothes and carried a bag and an umbrella.

Secret Service agents told police that they believe the illegal devices have been used to steal debit card information from other Western Massachusetts ATMs.

The skimmer is designed to steal account information from the victims’ debit cards and the camera is then able to record the PIN numbers as they are punched in, according to one of the reports, filed by Officer Michael Sousa.

Another report, field by Officer Michael Ingalls, stated that personnel from the bank and the Secret Service stated that the information gained from the devices is then used to create fraudulent ATM cards. The fake cards are used to steal from unsuspecting bank patrons.

A third report, filed by Sgt. Patrick Manley, stated that several TD Bank customers reported their debit card information was illegally collected by the devices.

Investigators, according to the police reports, began surveilling the ATM at 8 p.m. Saturday night.

Information on where the devices are suspected of being used elsewhere in Western Massachusetts was not immediately available.

TD Bank officials were not immediately available for comment.

Dario is slated to be arraigned in Palmer District Court Monday.
